Caprese salad

with tomato and basil
You can find a version of this salad in many fancy restaurants because it tastes as good as it looks. But what the superstar chefs wont tell you is that it’s also very fast and easy to prepare. So when you serve this dish, you too will shine like a superstar chef!

You can serve this salad family style on a large plate placed at the center of the table and diners can serve themselves onto smaller plates. Or you can serve the salad separately on small plates.

  2 large red or yellow tomatoes, sliced
  1/2 pound fresh mozzarella cheese, drained, sliced
  1 bunch fresh basil leaves
  3 tablespoons olive oil
  2 tablespoons red wine or balsamic vinegar
  Salt and pepper to taste


On a large platter, alternate and overlap the tomato slices, mozzarella cheese slices, and basil leaves. Drizzle with olive oil and vinegar. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Fun Variations

If you want to get real fancy, try using different varieties of heirloom tomatoes which come in many different shapes and colors.

Add slices of prosciutto.

Put it on a bun to make a veggie sandwich.

Sprinkle the plate with raspberries, blackberries, or blueberries.
